The answer to this question, as I see it, it is not either/or but both. Of course, one should study but he should also pray for God’s help while he studies.
To pray and not study is, of course, asking for what we ourselves do not deem important enough by virtue of not studying.
To study and not pray is hubris because we are showing our independence from God and dependence upon ourselves as being sufficient for the task.
