Fred Phelps was a minster for the Westboro Baptist Church. He was known for his extreme Anti-Jew, Anti-American and other terrible views. He protested the funerals of gay people, veterans, disaster victims, and other people he though experienced God’s wrath.

He is known for referencing Billy Graham as the worse false prophet since Balaam.

These qualities of Fred Phelps are terrible, but it is important to understand how we are saved. Here is what Ephesians says:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

Salvation is a gift offered to all who accept Christ, including to Fred Phelps.

Fred Phelps said he was a Christian, but was he really one? Let’s look at what Matthew says:

Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Matthew 5:17-20

Fred Phelps lived a life that was contrary to Christ’s. Christ dined with the tax collectors, he didn’t picket them. So was Fred Phelps saved?

Here is another verse that talks about salvation.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Romans 10:9-10

My argument would be that Fred Phelps didn’t believe in his heart that Jesus was Lord.

People like him pick and choose from the Bible and miss the greatest commandments, to love God and to love others. So in my opinion, he is not in heaven, as he didn’t truly know God, but rather he picked and choosed from the Bible to create his own God.

At the end of the day, only God knows his heart, and we can only take educated guess.
