This article is going to be part of a long series of alleged bible contradictions, if you want to see all of the articles, click the tag “Bible Contradictions”

So let’s get into it, Matthew 1:8 says that Jehoram is the father of Uzziah, whereas 1 Chronicles says that Jehoram’s son was Ahaziah. Let’s take a look at the verses:

First please note that Azariah and Uzziah are different names for the same being.

Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah

Matthew 1:8

Jehoram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son, Amaziah his son,
Azariah his son, Jotham his son

1 Chronicles 3:11-12

So is this a contradiction? Not at all, when the proper Hebrew and Greek grammar is understood. Matthew is giving an abbreviated genealogy in chapter 1. The word “father” used here in Matthew, is also translated to “begot”, which means “To become the ancestor of”.

In Chronicles, the Bible mentions Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah before mentioning Azariah. So there is a gap of 3 generations. Matthew was just trying to give the highlights while Chronicles went into much more detail.

So in Chronicles we have what is most likely an exact father to son genealogy, while Matthew was giving a descendant to descendant genealogy.
