How do we know that murder is wrong? The moral argument is an argument that comes from the idea that there is an objective moral truth about whether or not murder is wrong, and leads to the idea that God does in fact exist.

William Lane Craig’s Moral Argument goes as follow:

  1. If God does not exist, objective moral values do not exist.
  2. Objective moral values do exist.
  3. Therefore, God exists.

In this post, I’m going to go through each of these three premises.

1.) If God does not exist, objective moral values do not exist.

Why is this true? The definition of the word objective is:

Expressing or dealing with facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations

Merriam-Webster

This means that for something to be an objective moral truth, it cannot change with time. So if something is an objective moral truth, that means that that action was either morally right or wrong for forever.

Premise one is true because if God does not exist, there is no way to prove whether something is right or wrong. We could say that almost all humans agree that murder is wrong, but that doesn’t make it objective, because there is no higher standard to judge that moral statement off of. It would be subjectively true. It’s just our opinions.

So let’s move on to premise two, which states that:

2.) Objective moral values do exist.

This is an obvious truth we know of from our personal experience and from a historical perspective as well. We all know deep down that objective moral truths exist. We all know that murder is wrong. We all know that rape is wrong. These things have been objectively wrong since the beginning of humanity.

Also, from a historical perspective, organized society has never said you can kill someone without justification, or steal from people because you want to.

So know let’s look at the third premise which says:

3.) Therefore, God exists.

We have argued that objective moral truths cannot exist without God, and that there are objective moral truths. So it is reasonable to conclude that God does in fact, exist.
