These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.  Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.

Matthew 10:5-6 NIV

The Jews were the ones that posed a threat to Jesus’ ministry. The Gentiles were not the ones that were going to crucify Jesus.

Now, if Jesus went out and preached to the Gentiles and converted them, there is no chance at all that the Jews would believe that He is the Messiah.

The Jews looked at the Gentiles with disdain. The Gentiles were ‘unclean,’ anything that they did was immediately hated by the Jews. So, if all of a sudden a ton of Gentiles start saying that they were saved by the Jewish Messiah, then I doubt that the Jews would ever say that the Messiah professed by the Gentiles was the “True Messiah.”

No, Jesus needed to establish a foothold in the Jewish community, so that the Jews would see Christianity for what it is, a religion for everyone, and not for what it isn’t, something to be avoided.
