In the Old and New Testaments, we see unusual creatures in certain parts of the Bible. These creatures are very fascinating to study. This article gives a broad overview of eight “monsters” that are in the Bible. For more detail, be sure to check out the referenced Bible passages and consult other resources.
8.) The Cherubim
In popular belief, a Cherubim is a short chubby child, but in Ezekiel 10, they could not be any more different. Ezekiel talks about them having 4 faces, that of a cherub, a human, a lion, and an eagle. These are the angels which guard the gates of Eden, and they sound very, very, terrifying.
7.) The Behemoth
In the book of Job, there is a monster that is known as the Behemoth. Job 40:15-24 talks about a monster that is gigantic, powerful, and ranks first among the creation of God. Their tail “moves like a cedar”, and it has limbs that are “like rods of iron”. A lot of Young-Earth Creationists will claim that Behemoth was a dinosaur, but according to Jewish Tradition, the Behemoth is a primal earth symbol of chaos.
6.) The Nephilim
The Nephilim are some of the most intriguing characters in the Bible. Genesis 6 talks about how the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children with them, but who the Nephilim are is still debated. Some say they are the offspring of angels and human women, while others say that the Nephilim come from the Godly people of Seth and the descendants of the Bad people of Cain. These are just two of the most popular interpretations, and the true identity of the Nephilim is a mystery.
5.) The Leviathan
Job 41 talks about the Leviathan. The Leviathan is a massive sea monster that isn’t affected by human weapons. It breathes fire and emits smoke from its nostrils. There are some theories that the Leviathan is really just a poetic description of a crocodile, but the problem with that is that crocodiles don’t breathe fire. Some scholars interpret this monster as a symbol of chaos. But if this description is a literal description of a literal being, the Leviathan is a terrifying being.
4.) The First Beast
The Book of Revelation contains many monsters, and the First Beast is one of them. In Revelation 13, we see a Beast come out of the Sea. This monster has 7 heads and 10 horns. It also has the feet of a bear, the mouth of a lion, and the appearance of a leopard. Christians have long debated what the beast symbolizes, and it may remain a mystery until the end times.
3.) The Second Beast
Following the First Beast in Revelation 13 comes the Second beast, which rises from the earth. The beast had “two horns like a lamb” but speaks “like a dragon”. This beast performs false miracles and encourages people to worship the first beast. The beast also has the power to kill those who do not worship the first beast. The beast also forces people to receive a mark so that they can buy or sell, and without that mark, they can’t do business.
2.) Pit Locusts
In Revelation 9, a herd of Locusts comes into play during the first terror and descend onto the earth. But they aren’t just normal locusts. They sting like scorpions, look like humans, have the hair of a woman and the teeth of a lion. These locusts go after those who do not have the seal of God, after the blowing of a divine trumpet. They do not have the authority to kill but they have the authority to torment. Let’s hope we aren’t around when they come into the world.
1.) 200 Million Horsemen
This epic army appears in the Book of Revelation. However, they are not the same as the four horsemen who represent death, famine, war, and pestilence. During the second terror, these horsemen are responsible for the death of over ⅓ of the world. The horses have the heads of lions, and spit smoke, fire, and brimstone out of their mouths. These horsemen are led by fallen angels, which adds to their terrifying power.
Those are 8 terrifying creatures that we see in the Bible, and they make the Bible even more fascinating to study.
