Jesus is special. He changed the world through his death and he also fulfilled many prophecies that no other person could have. This article examines five prophecies from the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled, in his miraculous life, death, and resurrection.

1.) The Messiah would be Resurrected

8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful[a] one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Psalms 16:8-11

In this passage, David talks symbolically as the Messiah mentioning, that the Messiah will not face a long death and decay. This prophecy is then verified in Acts when the apostle Peter cites it in support of Jesus:

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.

 

29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.

Acts 2:22-32

2.) A New Covenant would come with the Messiah

It was seen in the prophecy that there would be a “New Covenant” with the coming of the Messiah. This is seen in the book of Jeremiah.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.

Jeremiah 31:31

Christ became the carrier of the New Covent and brought salvation to anyone, through faith. This is found in the Book of Hebrews:

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

Hebrews 9:15

Under Christ, our sins are forgiven, forever.

3.) The Messiah would be Rejected

In the Old Testament, David prophecies about how the Messiah would be rejected and then become the cornerstone of the New Covenant. In Psalms it says:

22 The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
23 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 The Lord has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad.

Psalms 118:22-24

In the New Testament, it becomes clear that Jesus is the cornerstone that was rejected but becomes marvelous. Ephesians 2:20 says:

20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himselfas the chief cornerstone.

Ephesians 2:20

Jesus has become the foundation for the Church through his life.

4.) The Messiah would be Called out of Egypt

In Hosea, the bible is clear that the future Messiah would be called out of Egypt. The prophet Hosea says:

“When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.

Hosea 11:1

In the Book of Matthew, it is clear that Jesus went to Egypt in fear of death pretty shortly after his birth.

13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

 

Jesus fulfilled this prophecies from the Old Testament and so many more. The odds of all of these prophecies being fulfilled by luck are slim to none. Jesus is clearly an amazing being who checked all of the boxes for the Messiah that we all need.
