Young Earth Creationists believe in the literal translation of Genesis 1 in the English Bible and many other bibles around the world.
Young Earth Creationists believe that the earth was created in 6 literal days that were 24 hours each typically.
Young Earthers also believes that the flood described in Genesis completely uprooted the ancient layers of the earth and added the majority of the rock layers we have on the earth.
On the contrary, Old Earth Creationists state these rock layers took millions of years to form.
Most secular critics see a major flaw with this theory in radiocarbon dating, as many rock layers have been dated to be millions of years old.
However, radiocarbon dating has been proven to be an unreliable technique to provide exact dates.
The question is, could radiocarbon dating be millions and perhaps billions of years off?

This is an issue that is foreign to the Ancient Near East. Let us point to Genesis 1:1, which is:
בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ – בראשית 1:1 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=בראשית1:1&version=WLC
Literally, it means, “In beginning of Elohim’s creating heave and earth…”
This is similar to the opening of many passages of Ancient Near East creation accounts, which all show the Hebrews were worried about the function of creation, not the material issues. Also, Josephus mentions in the beggining of Antiquities that Moses begins to speak philosophically, which means the 24/7 days are literary devises. Going further, the fourth day does not show creation. It destinguished function of water and land. The 1st day parellels 5th, 2nd parallels 6th, with 3rd paralleling 7th. The 7th day shows that Genesis 1, was considered a temple text, when the polemic is juxtaposed to the Mesopotamia accounts.
Whether the earth is old or young was of no importance to the Ancient Hebrews and should not be a concern of ours, theologically.
